"Is an Alarm System Really Necessary?"
by Roscoe Hunter, PSP
I have been in the alarm industry for over 12 years and after
thousands of installs and consultations with homeowners I have come to
one conclusion. Everyone can benefit in some way from a high
quality professionally installed alarm system.
Ultimately the
point I am trying to make is that everyone at one time or another can
have some type of emergency in their home. An alarm system can
at the very least assist you in getting help and at best be the
difference between life and death.
It may appear that I'm somewhat biased being a professional in the
industry. However, the reality is that I have a wife and 3
children that I am responsible for protecting and, I have a security
system in my home that allows me to sleep well at night. The
fact that I've almost had a bad kitchen fire that was caught in time
and a spree of burglaries in my neighborhood that never affected me
has nothing to do with my profession. In fact it makes me even
more proud of what I do for a living.
In 2001 there were 18.2 million property crimes including 3.1
million burglaries in the United States. That's a burglary about
every 10 seconds somewhere in the United States. The Department
of Justice has reported that there was a 2.9% increase in
burglaries in 2001 over 2000. All of these statistics spells out
one simple fact: No one is immune to a burglary or property
crime regardless of your location.
Over the years I've been in the home security industry I have seen
one common thread as it relates to break-ins. Burglaries happen
literally in every type of neighborhood from the ghetto to the
penthouse downtown, from the one room shack to the twenty room
mansion. It doesn't seem to matter.
There is in essence two types of individuals that get home security
systems, the person that just had a break-in or a break-in happened in
their neighborhood and someone who realizes that there is a
possibility a break-in could occur. This may sound somewhat over
simplified however, it is a simple truth that most people
ignore. The average loss in a residential burglary is almost
$1,400 (not to mention the priceless items that are lost).
You may be reading this article and have never experienced a
break-in or never "heard" of a break-in in your
neighborhood. In just about every home I have ever been to that
just experienced a break-in, the homeowner almost always says something
like "I wish I would have gotten a security system years ago but,
I never thought it would happen to me."
Although I haven't personally experienced a burglary but I've been
around hundreds of people who have. The amount of emotional
stress is probably more devastating than losing thousands of dollars
of possessions. The mere fact that someone has violated your
home is enough to make some people pack up and move. Not to
mention items of sentimental value that are stolen and can never be
replaced (how can you put a price tag on those types of items).
Ultimately, the choice is a personal one to get a monitored home
security system or not. However, I would have to say it
certainly isn't a bad idea to have peace of mind knowing that home and
family are protected. After all, what could be more important
than that?
