The number of estimated burglaries for the Nation in 2001 rose 2.9 percent over those reported the previous year.

The majority of burglaries are residential.  Most residential burglaries occur during the day and most nonresidential burglaries occur at night.  Burglaries totaled an estimated $3.3 billion for an average loss per burglary of $1,545.  Residential burglaries averaged $1,381 and nonresidential burglaries averaged $1,615 in 2001.
